Your Sim's Imaginary Friend Isn't Just Pretend

You buy the doll because it's cute. Maybe it matches the kid's room, maybe you just want another toy in Build Mode. Then one day your Child Sim starts talking to it like it's alive — and eventually, it actually is.
That's Imaginary Friends, the mechanic Adventure Awaits brought back from The Sims 3, and it's one of the rare kid-focused systems that goes deeper than a single moodlet. The doll isn't decoration. It's a personality generator that quietly shapes what kind of teen — and eventually adult — your Sim grows into.
It Starts As A Doll, Not A Friend
The ImagineMe! Doll is a regular Build Mode object your Sim can buy like any piece of furniture. On its own, it does nothing supernatural — a Child Sim can play with it the way they'd play with any toy. The friend part only kicks in once one of three conditions is met: the child befriends the doll through repeated play, reaches level 3 in the Creativity skill, or gets lonely enough from low Social needs that the game conjures a companion for them.
Only children can trigger this. Once it happens, the doll becomes a living, talking companion that nobody else in the household can see or hear — to every other Sim, it just looks like a kid talking to nothing.
Four Personalities, Four Very Different Kids
Before the doll comes to life, players can lock in one of four personality types: Goofball, Creative, Competitive, or Evil. Each doll ships with a default personality, but it can be changed in the pie menu before the transformation happens — worth doing early, since the choice can't be edited once the friend is real.
The personality isn't cosmetic flavor text. It decides which activities the friend suggests, which skills it nudges the child toward, and which social interactions unlock. A Creative friend pushes the kid toward artistic pursuits and can set them up to build creative skills faster later in life. A Competitive one turns playtime into constant contests. Evil is the one to watch — it introduces mean and mischief-flavored interactions aimed specifically at the child, and can eventually teach a kid how to start fires, opening up an interaction other children simply don't have access to.
The Friend Nobody Else Can See
While the friend is imaginary, it's invisible to every other Sim in the world, including household members. It shows up when the child needs it — comfort after a bad day, company during a nightmare — and it can influence decisions the way a bad-influence sibling might, just one only the child can hear.
It Can Become A Real Sim
Here's the part that separates this from most kid-only systems: the friend doesn't have to stay imaginary. If the bond stays strong through childhood into the teen years, players get the option to make the friend real. Once that happens, the former doll joins the household as a teenage roommate — not automatically a family member, though the player can choose to adopt them in. From that point on, they're a completely normal Sim with no lingering occult traits or hidden powers, built entirely from the personality and relationship history the player spent years shaping.
If a player never triggers that transformation, the friend can simply stay a doll or fade into memory — the whole system is opt-in, so a save file won't end up overrun with invisible companions unless the player actively grows them.
Why This One Actually Matters
Most features aimed at Child Sims amount to little more than a new toy to click on. Imaginary Friends is different because it front-loads consequences: the personality picked years earlier in Build Mode can determine a teenager's traits, aspiration leanings, and even the skills they walk into their teen years already ahead on. It's one of the few systems where a decision made for a five-year-old pixel kid still matters a decade of in-game time later.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Sim have more than one Imaginary Friend?
A household can own multiple ImagineMe! Dolls, but each Child Sim can only bring one doll to life as their own Imaginary Friend at a time.
Do pets notice Imaginary Friends?
Cats and dogs can sense them, though they don't interact with them the way a human Sim would.
Does the personality choice lock in forever?
The personality can be changed as many times as a player wants while it's still a doll, but once it becomes a real Imaginary Friend, that choice is permanent.
What happens if a child never turns the doll into a friend?
Nothing — it just stays a regular toy the child can play with normally, with none of the personality-driven interactions unlocked.
