The Sims 4 Made Grief an Actual Gameplay System

A Sim used to die, another Sim cried for an hour, and life went back to normal. That was pretty much the whole emotional arc death got in The Sims 4 for a decade.

Life and Death changed that by turning grief into something with actual structure — types, stages, and outcomes that depend on how the player handles it, rather than a sad moodlet that fades on its own.

Grief Isn't Just About Death

The mourning period this system triggers isn't reserved for losing a loved one. A Sim can enter it after being fired from a job or going through a breakup, not just a death in the family. Once triggered, the Sim is assigned one of four grief types, and which one they get shapes almost everything about how the next stretch of their life plays out.

Four Grief Types, Four Different Sims

Denial Sims bury the loss rather than face it, often reading as Bored or Fine on the surface while the real weight of what happened stays unprocessed. Left alone, this type is prone to sliding into Anger or the Blues instead of resolving on its own.

Blues produces a chronic low mood — frequent sad moodlets and a pull toward gloomy interactions like crying it out, though the state isn't permanent if the player intervenes.

Anger channels the loss outward, and these Sims tend to respond best to physical or expressive outlets — exercising or playing an instrument — rather than sitting with the feeling directly.

Holding It Together looks the healthiest from the outside, with the Sim projecting confidence while still cycling through sad moodlets underneath, trying to keep functioning normally despite the loss.

Every type responds differently to the same coping tools. A Holding It Together Sim doesn't need the same intervention an Angry one does, which means playing through grief now actually requires reading which type a Sim has rather than clicking the same "cheer up" interaction regardless.

There's a Wrong Way To Handle It

Coping is not guaranteed to work. Grief Counseling helps across all four types, and Sims who manage their emotions well can earn a Relieved moodlet as they progress. But mishandling it has consequences: a Sim's grieving period can get extended, their grief type can transform into a different one, and in the worst outcomes, an unresolved grieving Sim can walk away with a new negative personality trait baked in permanently.

Successfully coping instead leads to Acceptance, the final stage — at which point the grief type is actually removed from the Sim's list of traits entirely. Even then, the system doesn't fully let go: Acceptance comes with something called Lingering Grief, where a fully healed Sim can still experience a sudden burst of sadness — or even happiness — tied to memories of what they went through, popping up at random points for the rest of their life.

Funerals Feed Directly Into It

Grief in Life and Death doesn't happen in a vacuum — it's tied to the pack's overhauled funeral system. Funerals are now fully customizable social events where players choose the tone, activities, and how attending Sims remember the deceased, ranging from somber and reflective to more celebratory. Funerals also connect to the pack's new Will system, so a Sim who planned ahead can have their wishes respected during the event, adding another layer of continuity between how a Sim lived and how their household processes losing them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can grief affect a Sim's job performance?

Yes — grieving Sims can lose focus at work and withdraw socially while working through a mourning period.

Is there a way to just remove a grief moodlet instantly?

Players can use Shift+Click cheats on PC to set a Sim's mood directly, or use the Moodlet Solver elixir, an aspiration reward purchased with Satisfaction Points.

Does every sad event trigger the full grief system?

No — only significant losses like a Sim's death, a firing, or a breakup trigger a full mourning period with an assigned grief type; smaller sad moments still use regular short-term moodlets.

Can a Sim get stuck in grief forever?

Not permanently, but neglecting the emotional needs tied to grieving can prolong the process and shift a Sim into a different, sometimes harder, grief type before they're able to reach Acceptance.
